Passion and Purity: Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ's Control

Passion and Purity: Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ's Control - Elisabeth Elliot This is the best sex book ever written for unmarried people!

Yanga, the Miracle Village

Yanga, The Miracle Village - V. Ben Kendrick This is not an exceptionally well written book, but the story it tells is so compelling that it shines out despite the defects in writing style. Highly recommended.

The Year of Fog

The Year of Fog - Michelle Richmond Good read, but kind of sad.

Believing Is Seeing: Observations on the Mysteries of Photography

Believing is Seeing: Observations on the Mysteries of Photography - Errol Morris We tend to believe that "seeing is believing." In this important book, Photographer Errol Morris uses some well known photographs to show that, Photoshop or not, photographs can and do mislead. Not just because the photographer intended to deceive, which sometimes happens, but often because context is needed to understand what the photograph is actually saying. Everyone should at least skim this book. It's an important contribution to visual literacy.

The 7th Woman (Nico Sirsky, Chief of Police)

The 7th Woman (Nico Sirsky, Chief of Police) - Frédérique Molay I was expecting to love this book, but found the characterization shallow and the plot obvious. I knew whodunit as soon as he was introduced. Too bad. Could have been a good book.

Detroit: A Biography

Detroit: A Biography - Scott Martelle This book is a must read for everyone who wants to know what's wrong with America and what can be done about it. Especially chapter 20. It's unfortunate that such a brilliant analysis is buried at the back of a book that only Michiganders are likely to read. It should be published and widely distributed as a pamphlet and blog post. PLEASE, Mr. Martelle?

Unsinkable - A Young Woman's Courageous Battle on the High Seas

Unsinkable: A Young Woman's Courageous Battle on the High Seas - Abby Sunderland, Lynn Vincent The delightful adventure story of a wise, courageous, and skillful young woman. Tells of Abby Sunderland's attempted solo sail around the world.

The Dovekeepers

The Dovekeepers - Alice Hoffman I was very disappointed in this book. I love the idea of an historical novel about the siege of Masada, but this novel's anachronisms and heavy-handed feminism just don't cut it for me. If you want to learn about 1st century Judaism while reading a good novel, this isn't the book for you. But if you like strong female characters and don't care about historical accuracy, you may just love this book.

The Thirteen Hallows

The Thirteen Hallows - Derivative, yes. The thirteen hallows are an obvious attempt to attract Harry Potter readers. But the book is a heart-thumpingly good fantasy/horror story that makes you care about the characters and keeps you on the edge of your seat to see whether good or evil will win out. Highly recommended.

Assumption

Assumption - Percival Everett A set of linked mystery stories that turn the conventions of the genre upside down. Just when you Everett has fooled you into thinking you are reading conventional mystery stories, he slams you with a surprise ending you won't soon forget. Very enjoyable if you are ready for something a little different.

The Crack in the Lens: A "Holmes on the Range" Mystery (Holmes on the Range Mysteries)

The Crack in the Lens - Steve Hockensmith A well plotted story, but a bit on the vulgar side.

11/22/63

11/22/63 - Stephen King Definitely the best book by a writer with outstanding writing skill.

Out of the curtained world

Out of the Curtained World - Nancy Henderson An insider view of what it's like to become a nun. Fascinating and a little scary.

Blessed are the Meek

Blessed are the Meek - Zofia Kossak A historical novel steeped in the Christian worldview, Blessed are the Meek explores sin and its consequences in the context of the 5th Crusade and the life of Francis of Assisi. Skillfully blending history, legend, a deep Christian spirituality, and great insight into human nature, Kossak has crafted a novel which richly deserves its title, as the entire novel is an exploration of the truth of Jesus' teaching from which the novel takes its name.

Amaryllis in Blueberry

Amaryllis in Blueberry - Christina Meldrum Really makes you think about relationships and communication. Great story.

The Story of Mankind

The Story of Mankind - Hendrik Willem van Loon Mostly boring, though it did catch my interest briefly in a few spots.
